Reo library added to design software
Taura Whiri i te reo Māori has been working on normalising te reo Māori within the architecture and building professions.
It’s contributing to Room to Rūma, a word library for widely-used architectural software that exchanges kupu Māori for English words like bathroom, conservatory or kitchen.
Architect Richard Goldie, of Auckland’s Peddlethorp, says it’s still in its infancy, but it’s great to bring te reo Māori into the industry.
“This is going to sound a bit controversial, but this isn’t for Māori, this is for everyone to get familiarity with this language. And that’s the real beauty of it, is we can go for all of our people right across Aotearoa-New Zealand, particularly Māori of course but everyone is into this,” he says.
Mr Goldie says he hopes such innovations will encourage more Māori into the industry, and he knows that Māori clients are enthusiastic about the innovative tech.
