Haka stage given quacking good workout
The Bowl of Brooklands at Ngāmotu New Plymouth was given a sound check this morning as organisers of next year’s Te Matatini announced the judges and the rules for the national kapa haka championship.
The sound of the Pātea Māori Club doing Poi E mingled with the calls of the ducks in the pond in front of the stage in the natural amphitheatre.
Te Matatini chief executive Carl Ross says the biennial event has become more than a competition.
“It’s come to experience to be Māori, to come as a whānau, to experience the best kapa haka, to be part of this time at Matatini. It’s come away from just an even now. It’s the experience we have here so come and enjoy it,” Mr Ross says.
Tickets went on sale on the Te Matatini website at noon, with a five-day pass from February 25 to March 1 costing $200 plus fees.
