Tough warning in Kouka land satire
Playwright Hone Kouka has combined dance, theatre and comedy for his latest exploration of Māori life.
A four-day season of Ngā Rorirori starts this evening at Te Pou Theatre in Henderson as part of Auckland’s Kōanga Festival.
The satire, which has already run successfully in Wellington, revolves around siblings battling for the future of valuable coastal land.
“It’s about a brother and sister. A sister who’s an activist. A brother who is unfortunately a convicted fraudster. And it’s very comic in the way it’s put forward and everything like that, but unfortunately we do have those people in our hapū or at our marae,” Kouka says.
He says Ngā Rorirori is entertainment, but its themes will resonate with anyone who has colourful characters in their whānau.
