Collaboration key to Whakaata Māori fiscal strategy
Whakaata Māori sees collaboration with local and international broadcasters and independent production companies as a way to dig itself out of a $10 million fiscal hole.
The company has already reduced its production of in-house content and announced the shift of its Te Reo channel to be an online-only service in February.
Chief executive Shane Taurima told the Māori Affairs Select Committee yesterday the service is short $ 6 million for what it needs next year and $4 million for the year after.
He says it represents a cut of more than 20 percent to its budget.
“We are looking at how we can partner with other media companies, with other independent production companies as well as with other technology platforms and that is to expand the reach as well as better use data analytics to understand what our audiences want and where they want that content and what type of content they want as well,” Mr Taurima says.
He says international co-productions could be a way Whakaata Māori can expand its reach globally.
