Treaty Bill promises test credibility
Labour Party leader Chris Hipkins says there’s no sense in spending money on ACT’s Treaty Principles Bill unless the Government is looking for ways to slip it through.
An outline of the bill was released yesterday as well as a regulatory impact statement from the Justice Ministry which said it presents a significant risk to the Māori-Crown relationship.
Mr Hipkins says once the bill goes through a lengthy select committee process, millions of dollars will have been spent – and he questions the assurances from Prime Minister Christopher Luxon that National won’t vote for it at the second reading.
“You’ve now got David Seymour saying he thinks Christopher Luxon is going to change his mind and support the bill. Winston Peters said a couple of weeks ago on behalf of Christopher Luxon that the Government is open to changing his mind on the bill. Christopher Luxon out there repeatedly this week saying we’re not changing our mind on supporting the bill beyond its first reading but if Winston Peters and David Seymour don’t believe Christopher Luxon, why should the rest of the country?” Mr Hipkins says.
