New kuini to revitalise Kiingitanga

Kuini Ngawai Hono I te Po was installed yesterday during the tangihanga for her father Kiingi Tuheitia, ensuring an unbroken succession.
Mr Waititi says it’s been a profoundly sad week but also an extremely proud week as te iwi Maori came together to mourn their monarch and select a new one.
“A queen that has already captured the hearts of our people, already captured the hearts of our rangatahi and she will bring revitalised energy to the Kingitanga and usher in a new generation of kingites and supporters of the Kingitanga,” he says.
Mr Waititi says it speaks to a new energy coming out of Waikato, with the rohe also electing Te Pati Maori’s Hana Rawhiti Maipi-Clark as its MP.
