Code switches boost careers
Sports commentator Ken Laban says code-switching between rugby league and rugby union is becoming almost a given in the modern era.
Post-olympics many of the gold medallist rugby union Black Ferns Sevens stars – including Stacey Waaka and Tyla Nathan-Wong – are now playing in the NRL womens competition.
In the mens’ game, giant Sydney Roosters outside back Joseph Suaali’i will play union until after the 2027 rugby world cup – then return to league – and Kiwis fullback Joey Manu, Ngāpuhi will also try union.
“Rugby union is well and truly going to be the winner. Sua’ali’i obviously is going to represent the Wallabies at some point. And Joseph Manu, he will be in the frame for sure for the All Blacks,” Mr Laban says..
He says the current All Blacks coach played rugby league and loves its physicality – so he’s keen to offer players like Manu an opportunity if they deserve it.
