Auckland Council stems booze river
Auckland Council has finally adopted a local alcohol policy imposing stricter rules for new off-licences opening in the central city and 23 other suburbs.
Regulatory and safety committee chair Josephine Bartley says it’s taken more than a decade because of legal challenges by the liquor industry.
The policy means any application to open an off-licence in those areas is likely to be declined for the next two years, unless a very high threshold is met.
From December 9 bottle shops and supermarkets across Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland will not be able to sell alcohol after 9pm.
Bars, restaurants and other on-licences will be able to sell alcohol until 4am in the central city and 3am outside it, and closing time for sports clubs and RSAs is 1am.
