Cancer test reminders coming
September is Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month, with the message going out to tane and wahine to test for cervical and prostate cancer.
It feels personal for Waikato University professor Sandy Morrison, whose daughter Talei Morrison started the Smear Your Mea Campaign before dying of cervical cancer in 2018.
She says the new, less-invasive HPV self-testing kits mean there’s every reason for wāhine to take action.
“It’s a great thing, but don’t forget about the kōrero – and take your own actions afterward as well. You know for me rangatiratanga starts right there and then. What am I going to do to protect my family? What am I going to do to protect my whakapa as well? Professor Morrison says.
Leading up to and during Te Matatini in Taranaki in February, the Smear Your Mea campaign will again run the”One kapa at a time ” promotion first done by Talei Morrison.
