Low trust for treaty bill promises
Ikaroa-Rāwhiti MP Cushla Tangaere-Manuel says she’s not comforted by promises from coalition parties thart ACT’s Treaty Principles Bill won’t make it out of select committee.
Both New Zealand First deputy leader Shane Jones and National’s leader Christopher Luxton uses their speeches at the Koroneihana hui this week to say the coalitions agreements only required them to vote for the bill at first reading – and that’s where support would end.
The Labour MP says ACT’s David Seymour is also insisting the process would show many New Zealanders support the bill.
“I think where we’re really concerned is we all know David Seymour’s stance on it. We know that he could crumple the government. So what will National do – stability’s the wrong word, but to stay in power?” Ms Tangaere-Manuel says.
She says a bill attacking New Zealand’s foundation document – Te Tiriti o Waitangi – should not even make it to a first reading.
