Mojave trip reinvigorates Kingi
Musician and sometimes actor Troy Kingi, says going to the California desert, meeting eccentric people, and trying magic mushrooms for the first time helped unblock years of musical stagnation.
Te Tai Tokerau-based Kingi, of Ngāpuhi, Te Arawa, and Te Whānau-ā-Apanui, has just released the eight album in his 10:10:10 project to put out 10 albums in 10 genres in 10 years.
He calls Leatherman and the Mojave Green desert rock – and says going to the California high-desert town of Joshua Tree proved to be exactly what he needed.
“To find inspiration, to unblock, and just to find the flow again, that’s kind of been stagnant for the last few years. And we went over there and experienced a myriad of things… and needless to say we come back with an album with 17 tracks – so something must have happened over there,” Kingi says.
A documentary series about the about the recording experience is now available on tvnz-plus.
