Ngāpuhi ready to come out fighting
The chair of Te Runanga o Ngāpuhi says the iwi is ready to fight to hold on to what Māori have gained so far.
About 100 Ngapuhi members protested at Parliament yesterday before representatives made a submission arguing against the repeal of 7AA of the Oranga Tamariki Bill.
Mane Tahere says they were concerned both at the number of mokopuna put in state care, and by the Government’s legislative agenda.
“Our people are hurting at home and there’s a lot of mamae and there’s a lot of attacks on our hard fought gains in legislation, our hard fought games in the system. When our people are backed into a corner there’s only one way out and that will be up to our marae and our hapu back home how we actually gather and stop it. That’s the point where we are at,” Mr Tahere says.
Mane Tahere says Ngapuhi wants to work with the crown to move children and young people out of state care into the care of whanau and hapu.
