Local push missed opportunity for health spend
Green Party MP Huhana Lyndon says Te Tai Tokerau has ha a shortage for health workers for far too long – and government actions aren’t helping.
An email leaked to Radio New Zealand from a senior clinical manager warns of high risk areas including Dargaville Hospital where an overnight telehealth service has replaced on-site doctors.
Ms Lyndon says in the Pae Ora (Health Futures) Act introduced the idea of localities, supporting a community-led approach for improved wellbeing.
The government has been slow to act on it, restricting interdisciplinary and community led solutions.
“We know there was a lot of work put into the locality space which provided energy and focus on what the local needs were for health but also for the other sectors and that included local government so that’s a missed opportunity to reshape the spend of the health dollar in a rohe,” Ms Lyndon says.
