Roadside drug tests anxiety forming
The co-chair of the Aotearoa Legalise Cannabis Party is concerned new legislation to allow roadside drug testing will give the police another reason to profile Māori.
Maki Herbert says the tests will pick up 25 drugs, including prescription medicines.
It could also pick up people legitimately using cannabis for medicinal reasons.
“There are so many people using cannabis for medicinal that just might get caught up in the scenario of random drug testing and it’s just going to cause anxiety to these people that have got a legal document to say they can use whatever prescription drug and they are going to be penalised against it causing anxiety, stress, having to go to court to defend themselves, so there is a whole process of justice that is not justice,” she says.
Ms Herbert says the Government is building more prisons, so it needs bums on the beds to fill them.
