Mahi for Māori health recognized
Ngāpuhi doctor Ranche Johnson has been made a distinguished fellow of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners for her commitment to eliminating health inequities for Māori.
Dr Johnson is the clinical director for the National Hauora Collective, and she also worked for eight years at the health centre on Manurewa Marae.
She says marae are good settings for Maori health services. because of the complementary community support services that can be offered.
“When I was at Manurewa Marae alongside GPs and nurses they also had other traditional healing services, rongoa Maori and things like that which was able to be supported with whanau ora so a lot of our marae and hauora providers have that wraparound service which is needed to help our whanau on their journey to hauora,” she says.
