Anglican bishops says abuse report will drive change
The Anglican Church says the church owes it to survivors to change in the wake of the report of Royal Commission into Abuse in Care.
Archbishops Don Tamihere, Justin Duckworth and Sione Ulu’ilakepa say they acknowledge and take full responsibility for the church’s failures to provide the safe, caring and nurturing environment for those who have been in its care.
There have been clear failures to properly investigate and respond when abuse was reported, and the church has not provided accessible, straightforward processes for the handling of disclosures and complaints of abuse.
They encouraged any other survivors of abuse who have not yet come forward to do so.
The bishops also endorsed the report’s recommendation for an independent entity for the handling of future complaints.
