Name change delay irks Kororāreka
Supporters of giving Russell back its original name are frustrated at the time it’s taking.
Kororāreka Marae Society asked the New Zealand Geographic Board in 2021 to recommend the change, but the board couldn’t decide whether it should be just Korerāreka or have the dual name Russell-Korerāreka.
It then went to the land information minister Damien O’Connor, who wasn’t able to resolve it by the election, so the decision now sits with the current minister, Chris Penk.
Society chair Deb Rewiri hopes it won’t fall victim to coalition politics.
“There’s all this rhetoric coming from the other two coalition partners but National have been quiet about this so I’m hoping Minister Chris Penk will get it across the line,” she says.
