Episode 10: Te Moananui ā Kiwa
Today’s episode connects two kaupapa through the waters of Te Moananui ā Kiwa.
First, we discuss a virtual Māori Art Gallery’s fundraising effort to support the Kanak peoples of New Caledonia, who have been rallying against French colonizers and their attempts to stifle the Kanaky voice in their electoral system.
I spoke with Piupiu Maya Turei from Tini Whetu Project Space about their fundraising efforts and why they decided to tautoko this kaupapa.
The second kaupapa highlights the Hinemoana II, a waka hourua, which has welcomed Joelene Busby as the first female Māori captain to its all-female Vaka Moana crew.
She joins Aunofo Havea, the first female Tongan licensed as a sea captain, and Fani Bruun, the first Samoan woman to qualify as a yachtmaster. Busby, with over 20 years of experience and a legacy of traditional waka voyaging from her great-grandfather Sir Hector Busby, is a history maker herself as the first wahine Māori to captain and build a waka hourua for Aotearoa.
I spoke with Aunty Jo about the voyage and her aspirations for the next generation of ocean voyaging wāhine toa.
Whakarongo mai.
