Japan residency offers new colours for artist
A member of the Walters Prize-winning Mataoho Collective has been selected for a residency at the prestigious Setouchi Triennale in Japan in September.
Sarah Hudson, of Ngati Awa, Ngai Tuhoe, and Ngati Pūkeko, explores whakapapa, tino rangatiratanga and whenua – through painting, performance, video and sculpture.
She says the Setouchi festival is spread across several smaller islands – and when she visited earlier this year, she was struck by similarities to Aotearoa.
“There was also recognisable island things like, the wind, the water was really beautiful, and the people who live in those places kind of know those elements. They can tell when the wind’s changing, they’re just really connected with the weather and the taiao,” Hudson says.
As part of her residency she wants to learn about how locals make paint pigments from natural materials around them.
