Miners assured Aotearoa open for business
Resources Minister Shane Jones says Australian mining companies are well aware of the social and political challenges they may face to set up here.
Mr Jones is across the Tasman talking to mining sector interests as he delivers his message New Zealand is open for business.
He says while some Opposition parties have warned the rules will change again with a change of government, that will be factored in to any investment decisions.
“Naturally anyone who is coming to New Zealand, their proposal has to be compliant with our law. I don’t think New Zealand is a country that summarily or indiscriminately destroys people’s rights. Mining has fallen victim to the cultural war dynamic but I think everyone realises New Zealand is still an open, trading economy where the rule of law and contract is a key feature and I don’t see that changing any time soon,”
Mr Jones says.
He says New Zealand doesn’t have one sector which is considerably larger than others and has to do a lot of things well, but the resources sector has slipped back.
