Queer archives stir memories
A long-time LGBTQI+ activist says memory can be fragile, and people need to retain and pass on vital documents and histories.
Former Green MP Elizabeth Kerekere is the chair of Kawe Mahara Queer Archives Aotearoa, which is hosting a hui today at the National Library in Wellington to mark 38 years since the passing of the Homosexual Law Reform Bill and the start of New Zealand’s first Queer History Month.
Speakers will discuss Māori, activism, and communities within LGBTQI+ New Zealand history.
Dr Kerekere says if the history isn’t told, people will assume the community never existed.
“The whakatauki for our hui is he kitenga kanohi, he hokinga mahara. He kawenga mahara, he hapori kitea. So a familiar face stirs one’s memories but a collection of faces is a community seen,” she says.
