Independence call for Omāhu hui
Te Pati Māori will take a Declaration for Political Independence to today’s hui-ā-motu at Omāhu Marae in Hastings.
People who attended yesterday’s Toitū Te Tiriti protest at Parliament were invited to sign the declaration.
Party president John Tamihere says Māori need to resurrect their mana motuhake and unify politically, starting with a constitutional discussion among themselves.
“While (ACT Party leader David) Seymour and his mates talk about trying to destroy the Treaty, rather than engage in that nonsense, we want to have positive, hope-fuelled, mokopuna-centred conversations about what their future is going to look like and not have any white noise in the room,” he says.
Hosts Ngāti Kahungunu are expecting more than 3000 people at today’s hui.
