Mangere schools try to keep it local
Mangere schools want to keep local kids filling their classrooms.
They used the annual TwoSevenFive Day – a reference to the 275 telephone prefix – to launch their It’s all about Mangere campaign.
Ngā Iwi School principal and Mangere Principals Association chair Michelle Fepuleai says they want to create ways for primary, intermediate and high school tauira to stay in the area rather than join the hundreds heading out each day on trains and buses.
She says many parents have the wrong impression about what’s on offer.
“The kura in Mangere are amongst the best in the country. No matter what you hear in the media, no matter what you hear politicians talk about, we have amongst the best teachers where in Mangere so we want people to know that,” she says.
Michelle Fepuleai says Mangere schools have a major focus on addressing truancy, because attendance is an important measure for parents.
