Reo embraced as Netball NZ enters second century
Netball New Zealand celebrated its 100th birthday today by cutting a cake at the Auckland Netball Centre.
It’s the first national netball body in the world to reach the century.
President Tina Karaitiana says it’s looking forward to next 100 years.
To draw in the next generation it’s continuing to innovate with events like Friday’s Puni Reo Poitarawhiti tournament in West Auckland, where players, coaches and umpires are encouraged speak in te reo Māori throughout the games.
“That’s something that Netball New Zealand, we’re going to have a look at creating resources that are bilingual for our people, not just for Māori, but for our Pacifika because they do, particularly at high performance level, are really part of that fabric of our high performance space. And so we need to really look at some things like that,” Ms Karaitiana says.
