High tech cancer scan opens in Whangarei
Health Minister Shane Reti says Northland residents will now have the chance to have their cancers detected at an earlier stage.
Dr Reti last week opened Auckland Radiology Group’s new Whangārei clinic making it the first provincial centre to have a PET-CT or Positron Emission Tomography-Computed Tomography scanner.
The company says PET-CT scans are now an essential tool in the diagnosis and management of many advanced cancers including melanoma, lung cancer, breast cancer, colon cancer and prostate cancer.
Dr Reti says it could make a big difference.
“So lifting our cancer game with a high end piece of kit and speaking with the company who was deploying it, they have ambitions to put in other provincial areas. So this is a good news for rural and provincial New Zealand for those people who have cancer,” he says
