Henare refuses to concede left leadership
Labour Party list MP Peeni Henare has welcomed the Greens’ selection of Chloe Swarbrick’s selection as co-leaders of the Greens.
He says the Auckland Central MP is a forceful character, a fantastic wāhine and one of the strong debaters in the House.
But he rejects her claim the Greens are now the leading voice of the left, and says his mahi last week opposing the disestablishment of Te Aka Whai Ora as well as the combined opposition to repeal of smoke free legislation shows the importance of the left bloc working together.
“And it is about bringing a focus to what we are trying to do all here which is to oppose this radical, right wing Government which is impacting on all our communities so I think there’s a lot to be said there about the way the left works together, the way we look towards the next two and a half years as we sit in Opposition,” Mr Henare says.
