Alma mata honours decolonisisng educator
Māori educationist Linda Tuhiwai Smith will next month receive a distinguished alumni award from the Universit of Auckland to add to her already impressive line up of accolades.
Professor Smith, from Ngāti Awa, Ngāti Porou, and Tūhourangi, is a Distinguished Professor at Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi and an internationally-regarded expert in decolonising knowledge and systems.
Former colleague Leonie Pihama says the accolades come to someone who has always shown humility in the way she works.
“Because I know that she’s not doing this for herself, she’s doing it for all of us. And so, he mihi tenei ki tera wāhine toa, tenei mareikura mo āna mahi kia whakanui, kia whakaora ai ia tātou katoa,” she says,
.
Professor Pihama says in all the decades Professor Tuhiwai Smith has spent influencing countless students and indigenous people globally, it is still whānau, hapu and iwi that she credits most for her success.
