School lunch cut threat to most vulnerable
Tamakai Makaurau MP Takutai Moana Kemp says any cuts to the school lunch programme will hit the most vulnerable.
Associate Education Minister David Seymour is reviewing the programme which reaches about one in four school pupils, saying there’s too much waste and it can be delivered more efficiently.
Ms Kemp says too many families struggle now to buy enough food.
“It’s not just Maori. This is across the board. Two million people earn under $30,000 in this country, and there’s not a lot of money left to buy kai when whanau are making a decision whether they put kai on the table or pay their bills. It’s usually the kai that misses out and it’s always the tamariki, the mokopuna that are impacted the most,” she says.
Ms Kemp says if the Government put in a wealth tax it wouldn’t have to take away school lunches from kids.
