Te Pou giving chance to shine
Te Pou theatre co-founder Amber Curreen says credit for her winning a Creative New Zealand Te Taumata Hauora Te Kahu o Taonui Award must go to the Te Pou whanau who have worked to make a kaupapa-led theatre space in Tamaki Makaurau.
Te Pou has been able to create internships to show young people the wide range of tasks and skills required theatre that don’ even involve stepping on a stage – and that can be transferred to other areas like television and film.
“The work of trying to create spaces and platforms for other people to shine, whether it’s on the stage, whether it’s the other design pukenga they are growing, is a really fulfilling and satisfying part of being part of the arts,” Curreen says.
Te Pou’s latest production, a collaboration with circus performers a The Dust Palace called Te Tangi a te Tūī, is on at the theatre in Henderson until March 10.
