Bumper sticker solutions no answer says Hipkins
Labour Party leader Chris Hipkins says the government is reaching for bumper sticker slogans rather than solutions,
He says this week’s announcement of more use of sanctions against people on the Jobseeker benefit won’t solve a long-term, complex issue and is likely to make it worse.
“Benefit sanctions won’t actually deal with the challenge of long-term welfare dependency. In fact it’s likely to make it worse. Forcing families to move away from their communities in order to find work is also likely to make the welfare dependency problem worse because you’ll end up dislocating potentially a whole lot of children from their schools, from their families and so on. If we really want to think about crime and youth crime and why people end up in gangs and all of those things we’ve got to go to the coause and unfortunately the Government seems to be reaching for bumper sticker slogans all the time rather than real solutions,” Mr Hipkins says.
