Sadness and smoke as Port Hills burn
Otautahi-based Green list MP Kahurangi Carter says the fires raging in the Port Hills bring back memories of the devastating blaze in 2017.
Almost 100 firefighters with 22 appliances, 12 helicopters and two fixed-wing aircraft were today trying to contain the blaze, which has burned through more than 600 hectares of vegetation.
At one stage more than 100 homes were evacuated, but Christchurch City Coucils says most of them are being allowed to return.
Ms Carter says it’s a scary time for residents.
“The vibe is pretty sad. We’re feeling it a lot because our mother is on fire, papatuanuku is on fire. We know all the manu are gpoing to be displaced and even just having that smoke – my kids were like ‘why am I coughing? Why is it smoky?'” she says.
Kahurangi Carter says Christchurch people are good at rallying together and looking after each other.
