ACT wants Māori for Māori for everybody
ACT list MP Nicole McKee hopes the select committee hearing David Seymour’s Treaty Principles Bill will take discussions out to marae.
Ms McKee pitched the Bill to a hostile crowd at Waitangi this week.
She recognises Māori fear 40 years of progress in the development of Māori for Māori initiatives may be lost, but that’s not the intention of ACT – which is why it has launched its treaty.nz website setting out its views.
“We actually want to start the conversation clear and then we can move about like ‘what it is you are worried about?’ and ‘how can we make sure that really good initiative you’ve got, Māori, is actually available to everybody?’ and when we listen to some elders who say ‘it is available to everyone’ – it’s kind of not,” Ms McKee says.
