Bishop turns back book on RMA
Parliament has restored the Resource Management Act 1991 as the country’s planning legislation, repealing Labour’s Natural and Built Environment Act and the Spatial Planning Act.
Minister Chris Bishop says National has delivered on its promise to scrap Labour’s reforms by Christmas.
He says the Acts had introduced significant new legal complexity and uncertainty.
The Government is hanging on to fast-track consenting provisions, and they’ll be included in a replacement bill to be introduced later in the 100-day period.
He says it will also ensure Treaty settlements are upheld.
“In the second phase of the reform, the Government will amend the RMA to make it easier to consent new infrastructure including renewable energy, allow farmers to farm, build more houses, and enable aquaculture and other primary industries.” Mr Bishop says.
“The third phase of the reform will replace the RMA with new resource management laws based on the enjoyment of property rights, while ensuring good environmental outcomes.”
