Grey Lynn pop up for contemporary Māori art
A pop-up gallery in Grey Lynn could be a new centre for contemporary Māori art in Tāmaki Makaurau.
The space at 559 Great North Rd near the top of Williamson Avenue is initiative of Tracey Tawhiao from Ngāi te Rangi, Whakatōhea and Tūwharetoa.
The first show features work by Tawhiao, her cousin Shona Tawhiao, Rakai Karaitiana, John Walsh, and Natasha Keating among others.
Keating says she’s excited by the opportunity.
“So we’re just a sort of a pop-up space in the meantime until everything becomes real. And so its going to become a wonderful, central, gallery space for Māori and Pacific artists – and other artists that (Tawhiao) invites in,” she says.
Natasha Keating says if people really want to make this a memorable Christmas, any of the artworks on display should bring joy to the recipient for years to come.
