Ngāpuhi ki Tamaki event for wananga and whanaungatanga
More than 1000 Ngāpuhi uri are expected at Manukau’s Due Drop Events Centre tomorrow for the annual Ngāpuhi ki Tāmaki event to learn waiata, tautohetohe and celebrate their iwi.
According to the 2018 census, 40 percent of Ngāpuhi descendants live in Tāmaki Makaurau.
Organiser Tasha Hohaia says it’s also a chance to send a message to the leadership back in Taitokerau.
“We’re not going to waste an opportunity, when we’ve got that many whānau and hapū represented in one room. We’re going to talk about what we expect of our Ngāpuhi leadership and what collective entities should be spending the pūtea on and how we can best move together,” she says.
Tasha Hohaia says whanaungatanga is the main kaupapa for Ngāpuhi ki Tāmaki .
