New Police Minister Mark Mitchell has acknowledged Deputy Police Commissioner Wally Haumaha, who retires next month.
Mr Haumaha started off as a beat cop in Rotorua 40 years ago and rose through the ranks to become the second most powerful police officer in the country.
As deputy commissioner he is credited with implementing innovative policies aimed at strengthening relationships between hāpori Māori and police.
“I served with Wally, in Rotorua and he has been an outstanding leader and he must be close to 40 years of service. Great street cop, very good leader as Deputy Police Commissioner. I just want to acknowledge his service,” Minister Mitchell says.
Mr Haumaha has been inducting the new Deputy Police Commissioner, Pieri Munro from Ngāti Maniapoto, Ngā Rauru Kītahi, Ngāti Kahungunu ki Wairoa, and Kāti Irakehu i Kai Tahu, and says he intends to spend his retirement working at marae level back in Te Arawa.
