RMA change to squeeze out Māori
A planning expert says a likely return to laissez faire resource management will erode Māori input into environmental decision-making.
National and ACT are moving quickly to scrap the Spatial Planning ACT and the Natural and Built Environment Act, which replaced the 1991 Resource Management Act.
University of Auckland school of architecture senior lecture Bill McKay says it means a return a system heavily weighted to developers who can hire experts to argue their case.
“Quite often communities, Pākeha communities, Māori communities, we we just don’t have the money and the access to the experience to be able to get in there and do what we need to do in the environment court,” he says.
