Benefit bashing wrong track for poverty plan

The Child Poverty Action Group says the incoming Government must recognise reducing poverty is a priority … not an after-thought.
Convenor Alan Johnson, says promises from incoming Prime Minister John Luxon to keep the Child Poverty Reduction Act – and halve child poverty by 2028 – flies in the face of his get-tough-on-beneficiaries election rhetoric.
“The reality is, there’s nothing from what they’ve said that leads you to believe that’s actually going to be achieved. And what you’d need is some really fundamental changes, it’s just not tinkering,” he says.
Alan Johnson says the 2019 report from the Welfare Expert Advisory Group needs to be implemented – to ensure poorer New Zealanders can afford to live with dignity.
