Kemp survives recount challenge
Te Pāti Māori MP Takutai Tarsh Kemp’s majority has surged from four to 42 after a recount of votes in Tāmaki Makaurau.
The final count increased the Manurewa Marae chief executive’s vote by 18 to 10068, while Labour’s Peeni Henare saw his total down by 20 to 10,026.
Judge Kevin Kelly says in some polling stations, the votes in the official count were found to have been attributed to the wrong candidate for reasons which are unclear.
In the case of some larger polling stations the recount to be done up to three times to ensure any initial discrepancies were reconciled.
There were 220 special votes because the voter was not enrolled, and 41 disallowed because the voter ticked more than one candidate.
A recount in Mr Albert sought by National’s Melissa Lee was also unsuccessful, with Helen White retaining the seat for Labour with an 18-vote majority.
