Public servants waiting for ax to fall

It was Public Service Day this week, but the Public Service Association says it may be the last celebration members have for a while.
Assistant national secretary Alex Davies says National’s promise to cut departmental expenditure by 6.5 percent by reducing public service headcount is a threat to the PSA’s 90,000 members.
She says the public will see the impact.
“If you’re talking about the depth of cuts that I heard at various points in that campaign, there’s no way to make those without cutting services. There’s no volume of ‘working that out’ in a way that doesn’t impact the services that New Zealanders can receive,” Ms Davies says.
The Labour-led Government has made significant strides in rebuilding agencies, closing ethnic and gender pay gaps, and giving delivering vital cost-of-living catch-ups to its workers.
