Malone stands out in Māori surf comps

The 30th Aotearoa Māori Surfing competition chased the waves of the Far North at the weekend, with 112 surfers hitting their boards.
Committee member Charles Kauwhata says it started at Ahipara on Saturday, but when the swell died it moved on Sunday to Rarawa Beach on the east coast just south of Te Kao.
New Zealand representative Navryn Malone from Te Aitanga-a-Māhaki was a stand out, winning the Rangatira Tāne open division.
“He just showed all his class and the skills and just ripped up the waves everywhere he went. He received a trophy that was passed on to our committee by Ricardo Christie as a predominant leader in Māori surfing and excellence,” Mr Kauwhata says.
The tournament started in Taranaki and over the years has been held in Raglan/Whāingaroa and Tūranga.
