Hospital rebuild to take two terms

Incoming Whangarei MP Shane Reti says he’ll push for work to start on rebuilding the town’s hospital as soon as possible.
Dr Reti who’s expected to be the next health minister, has come under fire for comments which have been taken by hospital staff to indicate the $795 million Labour committed to stage one of the project could disappear into tax cuts.
He says that’s not going to happen – but it will be a six-year build once it starts.
“We need to start that upgrade as soon as possible because otherwise what will happen is what happened in Dunedin where delays and build inflation added up so much that over time the scope of the hospital had to be reduced. We can’t afford to let that happen in Whangarei,” Dr Reti says.
