Nats have second thoughts on Peters hangover
National Party campaign manager Chris Bishop says a hung parliament or a second election could be on the cards if National can’t form a Government with just ACT.
The warning is a signal to its voters National does not want to go into coalition with New Zealand First – and reverses the position of leader Chris Luxon earlier in the campaign that he would work with Winston Peters if he needed to.
Mr Luxon now says he doesn’t want uncertainty in Government so a two-party coalition, is a much better proposition.
New Zealand First has not been in coalition with National since the first MMP Government in 1996, which ended soon after the ousting of Jim Bolger as prime minister by Jenny Shipley.
