Crime settings right to address drug recovery
A drug awareness campaigner says political parties pushing tough on crime policies don’t know what’s going on at street level.
Brendon Warne from the Anti-P Ministry says New Zealand consumers are a target for methamphetamine and other synthetic drugs because they pay some of the highest prices in the world.
He says the courts are on top of the problem and focus on recovery-based sentences where people are sent for treatment rather than locked up for using drugs.
“People say the Government’s soft on crime. There’s nothing soft about the rehabilitation some of these people are doing – they had big addictions. There are some people who abuse it, I see that, but the amount of recovery houses, especially in Auckland, has just grown. There are so many people seeking recovery and that’s a good thing,” Mr Warne says.
The Anti-P Ministry’s bus is now back on the road after donors paid for repairs so his team could continue to work kanohi ki te kanohi in smaller communities where P has a hold.
