Iwi explores trailer home imports
Tauranga Moana iwi Ngāi Te Rangi wants to bring American-style trailer housing to Aotearoa.
Chief executive Paora Stanley is in the United States talking to a company producing fully-insulated three-bedroom homes – which could be landed at Tauranga port for less than $250,000.
Because they can be towed anywhere, it could be easier to get mortgage finance.
“If you’re on multiply-owned Māori land you won’t get a loan. But if these things are on a trailer the ban can come along and reposess the whole house right? That’s what makes it much easier for people to get a bank loan and a mortgage on their property, on multiple-owned Māori land,” Mr Stanley says.
He’s also approached a casino-rich multi-tribal group which may be willing to open a bank in Aotearoa to support the venture.
