Trawlng impact reduced says Moana
The chief executive of fisheries company Moana says there’s no conflict between its role representing the kaitiaki interests of its iwi shareholders with its trawling in the Hauraki Gulf.
Steve Tarrant says a deal to acquire the North Island inshore fisheries assets of Sanford means Moana will be the largest commercial operator in Tikapa Moana.
He says its activities only impact on 3.5 percent of the gulf, and it’s constantly looking for ways to support its fishers to improve how they operate, including investment in new technology.
“The risk is that people take the uninformed data and believe that’s the truth whereas the work we have done as Moana NZ in terms of where we fish, how we fish and how we impact the bottom, that is real fact. To derisk the situation we’ve go to keep informing the public and informing our stakeholders around exactly what we do,” Mr Tarrant says.
He says 60 percent of domestically-consumed seafood comes out of the Hauraki Gulf.
