Urban waterway rich source of pūrakau

Westgate’s Te Manawa Library is holding an interactive hikoi down Wai Huruhuru Creek in Massey to mark the start of Mahuru Māori.
Organiser Ashleigh Taupaki says it’s a way for people to learn the history and pūrākau connected with the urban waterway.
“I think because I’ve only known it in the contemporary now and because I grew up in Rānui, I’ve only known it as like this really brown, kind of dirty river. It was interesting to know that Te Kawerau ā Maki use that as a place to park their waka, pick up cockles was the pipi, all these sorts of things, and it was a really dense kauri forest as well,” she says.
Sunday’s hikoi starts at Riverpark Reserve off Universal Drive at 10am.
