Download AudioWestgate’s Te Manawa Library is holding an interactive hikoi down Wai Huruhuru Creek in Massey to mark the start of Mahuru Māori.
Organiser Ashleigh Taupaki says it’s a way for people to learn the history and pūrākau connected with the urban waterway.
“I think because I’ve only known it in the contemporary now and because I grew up in Rānui, I’ve only known it as like this really brown, kind of dirty river. It was interesting to know that Te Kawerau ā Maki use that as a place to park their waka, pick up cockles was the pipi, all these sorts of things, and it was a really dense kauri forest as well,” she says.
Sunday’s hikoi starts at Riverpark Reserve off Universal Drive at 10am.
