Hamilton City Council has voted to change the name of Sonning Car Park back to Opoia Paa immediately.
Hamilton City Council has voted to change the name of Sonning Car Park back to Opoia Paa immediately.
Yesterday’s decision acknowledges the land’s origin and its historical and cultural importance to the people of Ngaati Wairere past and present.
Deputy Mayor Angela O’Leary thanked Ngaati Wairere for the name change application.
She says the next steps for developing the central city riverside parking lot will be done in partnership with mana whenua.
Opoia Paa was a significant site in Kirirkiriroa prior to European settlement from 1863.
Plans to develop the site for housing will be considered in detail at next week’s Economic Development Committee meeting.
