Ruamatā sticks up for kura in hockey tourney
A Rotorua kura kaupapa has became the first Māori immersion school to qualify for the national secondary schools’ hockey competition in its 100 year history.
Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Ruamatā placed 11th in the Rankin Cup, which was held last week in Wellington.
Coach Parekura Rangitauira says hockey has been the school’s main sport since the it opened in 1987 – with a roll of just 20 tauira.
“The age range didn’t matter. So we weren’t restricted by, you know, having our babies and having our older students play together. So it was the one sport where we could all play together,” she says.
The kids have now switched to preparations for the national secondary school basketball competition in Palmerston North later this month.
