Former Māori Television host Julian Wilcox says the new Whakaata Māori studio restores the service’s capacity to make large-scale programmes in-house.

Mr Wilcox was MC for the opening of the Hawaikirangi facility next to Whakaata Māori’s East Tamaki headquarters.

The service had to leave its studios behind when it relocated from Newmarket in 2017.

“For a long time I think people have wanted this facility to be opened, so that Whakaata Māori could develop content for all its platforms – online, digital, and of course on some linear platforms, with Whakaata Māori and te reo,” Mr Wilcox says.

Hawaikirangi will get its first big test hosting Whakaata Māori’s election programmes, and it will also be available for training and for use by independent Maori content creators.
